Paediatric Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (PIASTM)
At KPL we have team members trained in Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization. It was originally invented for Adults and was then adapted for paediatrics use by Kanu Kaushik, a paediatric physiotherapist from India.
PIASTM is a skilled intervention where the therapist uses specific tools to facilitate mobilization of restricted tissue to increase flexibility, to increase range of movement, to minimize contractures which also helps to improve alignment and posture. We are able to use this technique in our clinic when clinically indicated to help children with Cerebral Palsy, Spinal Muscular Atrophy and other muscle conditions.
It is also successfully used in sports injuries, as it can help to treat acute and chronic soft tissue conditions and assist recovery, as it promotes a reduction in pain and allows the child to perform exercises recommended to strengthen the injured area.
